Quick answer

A good domain name is short (under 15 characters), easy to spell, uses .com where possible, avoids numbers and hyphens, and clearly signals what your business does.

12 rules for choosing a domain name

  1. Keep it short. Aim for under 15 characters. Every extra character makes it harder to type and easier to mistype. Compare “taxibh.com” with “best-taxi-services-in-bahrain.com” — the shorter one wins every time.
  2. Make it memorable. If someone hears your domain name once at a networking event, can they recall it the next day? Test this. Say the name to a friend and call them a week later to ask if they remember it.
  3. Use .com if possible. .com is the default TLD in most people’s minds. When someone hears your brand, they will type yourname.com by instinct. If .com is taken, consider .net, .co, or your local country TLD.
  4. Avoid numbers and hyphens. Numbers are confusing: is it 4 or four? Hyphens are misinterpreted: “my-new-site.com” sounds like “mynewsite.com” when spoken and loses traffic to the unhyphenated version.
  5. Make it brandable. A brandable name is unique, distinctive, and can stand on its own without being a description of what you do. Think “Google” rather than “SearchEngine.com”.
  6. Include a keyword if it fits naturally. If your business is “Manama Bakery”, then manamabakery.com signals what you do while being brandable. Do not force keywords into an awkward name.
  7. Check trademarks before you register. Registering a domain that infringes on an existing trademark is a legal risk and you will lose it in a dispute. Run a quick trademark search before you commit.
  8. Check social media handle availability. A consistent name across your website and social profiles makes you easier to find. If @yourbrand is already taken on Twitter or Instagram, consider a different domain.
  9. Think long-term. Your domain should still make sense in ten years. Avoid trend words (“crypto”, “metaverse”, “AI”) that may date your business.
  10. Consider local TLDs for local businesses. A Bahrain business serving local customers can benefit from .com.bh. It signals locality and may help with local SEO.
  11. Make sure it is pronounceable. If you have to spell it out every time you say it, the name is too complicated. Test by telling someone the name without spelling it and see if they get it right.
  12. Future-proof for expansion. If you are “ManamaCakes.com” today but might offer catering or savoury items later, consider a broader name that does not paint you into a corner.

Checking availability

Once you have a shortlist of names, check availability using any domain registrar’s search tool. Do not overthink this step — the vast majority of good .com domains are already registered, so you may need to iterate through ten or twenty options before finding one that is free.

If your preferred .com is taken, check whether the current owner is using it or just parking it. A parked domain with no content may be available to purchase. Many registrars offer a backorder service that notifies you if the domain becomes available.

BahrainServer offers domain registration and transfer services for .com, .net, .org, .com.bh, and dozens of other TLDs. Our search tool checks availability in real time and suggests alternatives if your first choice is taken.

TLD guide — which extension to pick

TLDBest forTypical cost (per year)
.comMost businesses, global audienceBD 4–BD 8
.netTech companies, ISPs, alternatives when .com is takenBD 5–BD 9
.orgNon-profits, charities, open-source projectsBD 5–BD 9
.coStartups, short alternatives to .comBD 6–BD 12
.com.bhBusinesses targeting Bahrain specificallyBD 8–BD 15
.ioTech startups, SaaS products, developer toolsBD 10–BD 20

There is no wrong TLD as long as it fits your audience. The important thing is to pick one and stick with it. Never split your brand across multiple TLDs — pick your primary domain and redirect all others to it.

Frequently asked questions

.com is still the best for most businesses. It is the most recognised and trusted TLD. If your exact .com is taken, .net, .co, or your country’s TLD (.com.bh for Bahrain) are good alternatives.

Aim for under 15 characters. Shorter domains are easier to type, easier to remember, and less prone to typos. Every additional character increases the chance someone will mistype it.

It is worth buying the .com, .net, and your local country TLD if you can afford it, plus common misspellings. This prevents competitors or squatters from registering them and protects your brand. Redirect all of them to your main domain.

Technically yes, but practically it is painful. You would need to redirect the old domain to the new one, update every place the old domain appears (email, business cards, social media, directory listings), and you will lose some SEO equity. It is much better to choose carefully the first time.

Standard .com domains cost around BD 4–BD 8 per year. Premium domains (short, valuable words) can cost significantly more. Country TLDs like .com.bh vary by registry. Most hosting providers including BahrainServer offer a free domain with annual hosting plans.
