The Domain Name System (DNS) is what translates human-readable domain names like example.com into the IP addresses that computers use to communicate. Without DNS, the internet as we know it would not function. This tool lets you query any domain's DNS records in real time so you can see exactly what is configured and verify that your settings are correct.

What each record type means

A records map a domain to an IPv4 address — this is what most websites use. AAAA records are the IPv6 equivalent. CNAME records alias one domain to another, commonly used for subdomains like www pointing to the root domain. MX records specify the mail servers that handle email for the domain, complete with priority values. TXT records store arbitrary text data, often used for domain verification (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and security purposes. NS records list the authoritative name servers for the domain — these are the servers that contain the official DNS data.

The tool displays each matching record in a table with the name, type, value, and TTL (time to live) in seconds. TTL tells DNS resolvers how long to cache the record before checking for an update. Lower TTLs mean faster propagation when you make changes.

When you might need a DNS lookup

DNS lookups are useful in many situations. If you have just changed your hosting provider or pointed your domain to a new server, a DNS lookup confirms whether the changes have propagated. If email is not arriving, checking MX and TXT records can reveal misconfigured mail exchangers or missing SPF records. If a domain is not loading, checking A records tells you whether DNS resolution is working at all. For developers and system administrators, the DNS lookup is an essential debugging tool that sits alongside ping, traceroute, and dig.
