Quick answer

A good meta description is 150-160 characters, includes the focus keyword once naturally, states a benefit, and ends with a soft call to action. Each page needs a unique, hand-written description. The formula: [action verb] + [keyword] + [benefit] + [soft CTA]. Example: "Compare cheap web hosting plans from BD 3.5. NVMe storage, free SSL and 24/7 support included. Start your free trial today."

What meta descriptions do

A meta description is the short paragraph that appears under your page title in search engine results. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it heavily influences whether someone clicks your result instead of a competitor's. Google also uses it as the snippet text when it accurately describes the page content.

Meta descriptions serve three purposes: they summarise the page content for searchers, they differentiate your result from others on the same SERP, and they encourage a click by stating a clear benefit. A well-written meta description can increase click-through rate by 5-10%. For a complete SEO overview, read what is SEO and our on-page SEO checklist.

The formula

Every meta description follows the same structure. Memorise this formula:

[Action verb] + [Target keyword] + [Unique benefit] + [Soft call to action]

  • Action verb. Start with an active verb: Learn, Compare, Discover, Find, Get, Build, Create, Improve, Fix, Download.
  • Target keyword. Include your focus keyword exactly once, naturally. Do not stuff it — once is enough for both users and search engines.
  • Unique benefit. State what makes this page valuable. Facts, numbers and specific claims outperform vague statements. "14 proven fixes" outperforms "lots of tips."
  • Soft CTA. End with a gentle call to action: Read the guide, Get started, See pricing, Learn how, Try it free.

Keep the total between 150-160 characters. On mobile, only the first 120 characters are visible, so put the most important information first.

Common mistakes

Avoid these meta description mistakes:

  • Duplicate descriptions. Using the same description on multiple pages tells Google those pages are similar. Every page gets a unique description.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating the keyword three or four times makes the description unreadable and may trigger a Google rewrite. One natural mention is enough.
  • Too short or too long. Under 120 characters wastes prime real estate. Over 160 gets truncated. Stay in the 150-160 sweet spot.
  • Missing keyword. If the keyword does not appear in the description, searchers may not realise the page answers their query.
  • No call to action. A description that ends with a statement rather than a CTA misses the opportunity to encourage a click.
  • False promises. If the description promises something the page does not deliver, visitors bounce quickly, which hurts your SEO.

A/B testing

Meta descriptions can and should be tested. The same page can generate significantly different click-through rates depending on the description. Here is how to test:

  • Step 1. Write two to three different meta descriptions for a single page. Vary the benefit or the CTA while keeping the same keyword.
  • Step 2. Run the original and variants for 2-4 weeks. Track clicks and impressions in Google Search Console.
  • Step 3. Compare click-through rates. The description with the highest CTR wins. Implement it as the permanent description.
  • Step 4. Repeat quarterly. Search behaviour changes over time, and a description that performed well six months ago may underperform today.

Focus testing on your highest-traffic pages first. A 10% CTR improvement on a page with 10,000 monthly impressions translates to 1,000 extra visitors, on-page SEO techniques should always be tested. See our on-page SEO checklist for more actionable items.

Useful tools

These free tools help you write better meta descriptions:

  • Yoast SEO — The most popular WordPress SEO plugin. It highlights meta description length and shows a preview of how it appears in Google results.
  • Rank Math — An alternative to Yoast with similar functionality. It also shows keyword density and offers schema integration.
  • Portent SERP Preview Tool — A free web tool that shows exactly how your title and meta description look in Google search results on desktop and mobile.
  • MozBar — A browser extension that displays meta data for any page. Useful for competitor analysis — see what descriptions they use and adapt the approach.
  • Google Search Console — Shows which of your pages have missing or duplicate meta descriptions. Prioritise fixing those pages first.

Frequently asked questions

150-160 characters is the sweet spot. Google typically displays the first 155-160 characters on desktop and 120-130 on mobile. Keep it between 140-160 and put the most important information in the first 120 characters.

Meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, but they affect click-through rate. A well-written meta description can increase CTR by 5-10%, which indirectly signals relevance to search engines.

Never. Duplicate meta descriptions harm your SEO. Google may ignore them entirely and generate its own snippet. Every page needs a unique description that accurately reflects its content.

Yes. Google may rewrite your meta description if it thinks the generated snippet better matches the searcher's query. This happens most often with short or irrelevant descriptions. Writing accurate, detailed descriptions reduces the chance of rewrites.

Use an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO, Rank Math or All in One SEO. Each plugin provides a field for meta description below the page or post editor. If you prefer not to use a plugin, you can add meta tags directly to your theme's header.php.
