Keyword density is one of the oldest on-page SEO metrics and it remains relevant. The goal is to use your target keyword enough times that search engines understand the topic, without crossing the line into keyword stuffing.

What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears in your text relative to the total word count. For example, if your page has 500 words and your keyword appears 10 times, the density is 2% (10 ÷ 500 × 100). The sweet spot is generally 1-3%. Below 1% and search engines may not recognise the topic. Above 3% and you risk being flagged for over-optimisation.

Does keyword density still matter?

Search engines today use semantic analysis and entity recognition, so exact-match density is less important than it was ten years ago. However, it still serves as a useful sanity check. If you are writing naturally about a topic, your density should land in the right range without forcing it. If it does not, you may need to go deeper on the subject or adjust your content strategy.

Use this tool to check existing content and to guide new writing. The preview with highlighted keywords helps you see exactly where and how often the term appears.

Frequently asked questions

Most SEO professionals recommend 1-3%. Below 1% and you may not rank for the term. Above 3% risks keyword stuffing penalties. For competitive terms, leaning towards 2-3% can help, but always prioritise natural readability.

It is one signal among hundreds. Google uses AI-driven systems like BERT and RankBrain that understand context, so exact keyword frequency is less critical than it once was. However, a reasonable density confirms to search engines that your page is about the topic.

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) keywords are related terms that help search engines understand context. Using synonyms and related phrases naturally in your content improves relevance better than repeating the exact keyword. The tool here counts the exact keyword, but we recommend reviewing related terms in your content too.
